Celebrating cupcakes: Happy Birthday Auntie Loo’s!

Auntie Loo's Treats is celebrating its 2nd birthday with 2 parties: today and tomorrow night

As our readers probably know, we here at Local Tourist Ottawa love cupcakes.

If you feel the same about the sweet treats, you should likely head over to 507 Bronson Street (at Flora) today to celebrate the 2nd birthday of Auntie Loo’s Treats. (For those of you who’ve never been, it’s pretty easy to spot: Just look for a storefront that’s painted cotton-candy pink.)

Auntie Loo’s is an all vegan bakery — using organic ingredients wherever possible — that sells more than just cupcakes. Although the shop opened in 2009, owner Mandi Loo has been selling her goods around Ottawa for much longer — since 2004, when she started out at craft sales and Herb & Spice (her former employer.)

Aren’t sure if you can be sold on vegan cupcakes. We think you’ll be surprised. Hilary Duff, our cupcake queen, described Auntie Loo’s sweet treats like this:

Being the hardcore peanut butter lover that I am … I am happy to report that I reached cupcake nirvana. My cupcake was like nothing I’ve ever tasted before. The peanut butter flavour in the icing made it taste more savoury than the traditional cupcake, and I felt like I was eating a creamy peanut butter cookie, only better. The chocolate cake pleasantly surprised me as well. I’m not a huge fan of chocolate cupcakes, but found that Auntie Loo’s cake lacked that occasionally bitter chocolate zing that dominates all other flavours. Not only that, but the cake was gloriously moist.

And since Auntie Loo’s isn’t your traditional bakery, she’s not celebrating in the most traditional way. Sure, you can (and should) stop by the shop between 10 am and 4 pm to enjoy the free food samples offered up by the Rideau Valley Roller Girls, cosmetics from LUSH, a cupcake photobooth (get your photo with a giant cupcake) and a charity BBQ. (You might even want to pick something up for tonight’s Harvest Noir.)

There’s also going to be a fun scavenger hunt today featuring someone named Mattycakes in the Centretown area. At 11 am, 1 pm and 2:30 pm, a password will be released on Auntie Loo’s blog, Twitter and Facebook page. The first person to find Mattycakes (shown below) will win a free 8-inch cake. Fun!

BUT since this is Auntie Loo’s 2nd birthday, why not celebrate twice?!? A second party takes place tomorrow night at the uber-fun Babylon night club for MOD night. Who has any excuse to stay at home this weekend?
